The University Management's Reply

Letter delivered by the building security:

The Occupiers of the Hicks Building Lecture Theatres 5, 6 & 7
University of Sheffield

17th March 2009

Following the statement from the Union of Students Executive Committee condemning your occupation of the Hicks Building Lecture Theatres, the University Executive Board has taken the decision that it is unwilling to enter into discussions with any group other than one directly sanctioned by the Union of Students.

For this reason I am writing to confirm that you should not expect any further communications regarding your demands from either the Vice Chancellor or other senion members of University staff.

The University did respond to the Union of Students previously on this issue, and this communication from the Vice Chancellor remains our agreed position.

Yours Faithfully
Dr D E Fletcher
Registrar and Secretary

Cc Vice Chancellor
Cc President of the Students Union

T
he group will issue a responce once we have discussed the reply.

  2. If all you're REALLY interested in doing is:

"Our aim is to disrupt University Management, not students education."

then why don't you go and occupy a few rooms in the University administration buildings rather than lecture theatres??

Oh this is CLASSIC! They're just proving that uni bureaucracy undermines your rights to freedom of speech and freedom of expression. Good on you guys, stay strong!

I've always considered freedom of speech and freedom of expression perfectly valid rights - when you're not committing a crime in order to achieve them.

Still, good to know the law is supportive when it suits you. Good luck with that, keep us posted with how you get on.

  5. I dont know why the union wont support you. Surely the Union should stand up for students who are standing up against aggression.

I thought Sheffield had many leftist officers/councillors this year?

Surely fiona Edwards and Rebecca Watson - Student Broad Left officers could help out?

    in Solidarity!

  6. how are they standing up to aggression? The students started it by illegally occupying someone else's land and then wonder why the university starts acting aggressively with the lawyers.

    The irony.

  8. I can see it now:

"You ARE going to tell me what I want to know"

"I don't have time for this dammit - tell me what I want to know!"
