We have just been in conversation with a History Lecturer who had a booking to give a seminar on Post Apartheid South Africa. The management had originally relocated the seminar to room F28 upstairs, which was apparently double booked.
The lecturer then came to us and we offered to allow them to use Lt 5 for their seminar. However he was then told by a manager that they were not allowed to hold lectures in our occupied space, who went upstairs to clear up the double booking. The lecturer expressed his support for our cause.
We re-iterate our desire to cooperate with students and staff to continue with their lectures in our occupied space, and condemn this attack by University Management on lecturer's autonomy. As we have repeatedly stated, Lecture theatre 7 is locked and not under our control, and that lectures are welcome in both Lt 5 and 6 if needed.

It's probably the smell keeping them away tbf
ReplyDelete"went upstairs to clear up the double booking"
ReplyDeleteI hope he flushed afterwards
"University Managment Disrupting Lectures"
ReplyDeleteHonestly you could'nt make it up!
As I think was said elsewhere, without the magnanimous support of the occupiers it's a wonder any lectures at all manage to go ahead.
ReplyDeleteI mean, how any students managed to learn anything or, even worse, obtain degrees in the days before such enlightenment really is a mystery.
This reminds me of an episode of Grange Hill
ReplyDeleteCan you not understand why the university would not want to have lectures in the space you occupying?? The only people who are disturbing lectures are you lot doing the occupation, there is no point arguing that fact. Hypocritical soap dodgers.
ReplyDelete"Hypocritical soap dodgers."
ReplyDeleteYou must be the same person as made that massive post of complete rubbish that was completely discredited yesterday.
"Can you not understand why the university would not want to have lectures in the space you occupying?? "
Well i guess they dont want anybody to see the occupies are they are getting scared it will rally support.
"The only people who are disturbing lectures are you lot doing the occupation, "
The university actually told a lecturer to NOT do his lecture, can you not read?
Seriously, there has been not 1 good argument against the occupation. If you want to argue, go read up on the subject and talk to people involved, get educated before you go throwing your incorrect bias rubbish.
"Seriously, there has been not 1 good argument against the occupation."
ReplyDeleteActually, amongst the piss taking, there have been plenty.
For whatever reason, you've opted to ignore anything which doesn't suit your own political agenda.
Surely you've worked out by now:
* Your occupation isn't accepted as democratic in light of the SU vote
* It is not representative of the overall student opinion (and you certainly have no evidence to prove otherwise)
* People in general are unwilling to be blackmailed into a 'debate' with you on the one-sided terms you're imposing
* Your occupation is considered unhelfpul and disruptive to lectures and the education of other students
* Your initially stated aims have attracted a strong degree of mistrust due to the various implied political leanings you've shown
* Many people support aid for Gaza in principle, but not in the context of direct action or disruptive activity
If you don't understand the principle behind any of those points, I suggest you spend some time reading through the numerous comments your blog has attracted. By read, I mean listen, empathise and understand - as opposed to look at and dismiss.
If that still doesn't work, I suggest you're seriously not interested in the sensible opinions of others which conflict with your own narrow minded attitude to achieving your own self serving needs.
Well said that last post.
ReplyDeleteI've noticed that anyone making a reasonable argument against the "occupies/militia/occupation" is either a/ branded a 'troll'; b/ bad mouthed (as above) or c/ completely ignored.
Whoever wrote the post ^^ I've quoted it in this piece: http://www.lazystudents.org/2009/03/objections-to-occupation-sheffield.html
ReplyDeleteReally good summary.
Thankyou folks, always glad to be of service...
ReplyDeleteDon't expect any kind of sensible response though - not seen any thus far...
Then you can't read.
ReplyDeleteNot a single one of your claims beyond the 'SU vote' (that sterlingly accurate 'final say' on student opinion)can be corroborated with anything more than your own arrogant word. Your experience with the wider student body has yielded different conclusions as to the weight of public support than mine (not surprising, considering you are evidently some kind of a-social misanthropist). Why don't you just compare the sizes of the pro and anti facebook groups?
Case rested.
ReplyDeleteAt least the response on the other blog was polite, sensible and well reasoned.
Facebook as a popularity contest? Please.
To the perosn who suggest's comparing facebook groups. You deride an SU vote as unrepresentative and then sugggest Facebook group memebership as a better expression. Bravo your logic is infallible. "I don't like the opinion expressed by a democratically elected student body so instead will use membership of facebook groups as a better gauge of democratic opinion" Hows that Cognitive dissonance working out?
ReplyDelete"We re-iterate our desire to cooperate with students and staff to continue with their lectures in our occupied space,"
ReplyDelete*Their* lectures, *our* occupied space. Not that there's a divide between what the student body wants and what you're doing.
