Today's update

We've spent today continuing to work out the basis on which we want negotiations with University management to take place. We're hopeful of getting some movement and possibly even beginning meetings today.

We'll be meeting in Occupied Hicks LT6 at 1pm today to decide what we want occupation delegates to negotiation meetings to say and how we can ensure they remain accountable to the whole occupation.

Later today there'll be a meeting led by the PSC on their campaign against Veolia, a transport company involved in building expansionist settlements in Israel. The discussion will give activists an opportunity to discuss the usefulness of tactics such as boycotts and sanctions, which are controversial issues within the movement.

Keep checking this blog for more info.

  4. Glad to see you are continuing to ignore your lack of democratic mandate. "Ooooh the SU elections don't represent our views". If you had got off your lazy champagne socialist asses and campaigned so you engaged with your fellow student electorate you might now have some legitimacy. Until you have been elected by your fellow students your just a bunch of annoying, lazy hippies spouting off and inconveniencing everyone else.

  6. Now in its, fourth day, and it seems a weekend is looming, here at underclassrising.net we find ourself in a strange position due to fact of those involved. The Alliance for workers liberty those who created this uproar www.indymedia.org.uk are very much the involved, and while there are claims of democracy and it all been done on consensus, we all know to well from Matilda about how the dominant can simply force there view upon the rest of the group and those involved.

We have said it time again we have no time for The Middle Class, also involved are The Socialist Workers Party The Anarchist Federation, the list goes on, we do not suport the politics of the groups involved, neither do we support The Palestine Campaign we do however understand that such an occupation raises the issue of Palestine, also raise wider issue of how all university are complicit with there involvement with The Israeli State, in a week where
Tristan Anderson, a 38, an American citizen, was critically injured on Friday13 3 09 by Israeli troops during protests against Israel’s Wall in the West Bank village of Ni’lin. He was hit in his forehead by a new type of high velocity, extended range teargas projectile, and has been transferred to Tel Hashomer hospital, near Tel Aviv. Tristan is unconscious, anesthetized and artificially respirated, has sustained life-threatening injuries to his brain (as well as to his right eye), and is expected to undergo several operations in the coming days, in addition to the one he underwent today,

along with the continued occupation of Gaza and we need only read today Guardian http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2009…ings-civilians
Striking testimony has emerged from Israeli soldiers involved in the Gaza war in which they describe shooting unarmed civilians, sometimes under orders from their officers.

One soldier described how an Israeli sniper shot dead a Palestinian mother and her two children, adding that fellow troops believed the lives of Palestinians were “very, very less important than the lives of our soldiers”.

This is why we support this occupation, and we would argue the aims and objectives of those involved are weak. For updates images on The Occupation of Sheffield goto:

  14. Anyone else seen photos of the occupation? It's so good they're only consuming ethical, non-multinational corporate products.

I'm sure their food was just carried in Tesco bags that were recycled on behalf of other people...

  17. illegible wtf, as there are no links it might seem out of context, in words we support the occupation but not the middle class, and following our wed meeting, we have pulled back from any active involvement due to The AWL, we uterley condone there politics, there for us it would to much of a compromise to be involved, check out underclassrising.net for full article with the links, we are sure it will become more illegible but then it is the working class aint it, never fucking been know to be illegible.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Awww, that's cute. You're angry that people don't understand the words you're using anymore, much less your argument in the first place.

Anyway, how's it too much of a compromise to be involved? Waiting on a Tesco delivery?

    ReplyDelete
  19. what with the AWL yes a serious compromise to be frank, following there actions in feb of this year, and the words at meetings, forgive us for this but lets be frank here shall we there scum, and we desire not to be in the same room or space as them if we are to be honest, take the persons from The AWL and we know there allright, place them into The AWL whole new ball game is it not, look we support the ocupation as a tool of propaganda and keeping the issue there..

    ReplyDelete
  20. How, in your crazy little world, was 'occupying' two rooms of one small university building in Britain going to make a difference to this global issue? Instead of sitting on your arses, claiming you care about inequality and 'corporate profiteering' in the world, why don't you do something that actually has some impact? I agree, the situation in Gaza is a disaster, but there are better routes that can be taken to raise the profile and encourage the donation of money and resources.

As for the demands being made, the University of Sheffield, and any other university for that matter, whose sole purpose is to educate, should remain politically neutral. Why do you have the right to change that? Let's face it, what you're doing is basically blackmail. Meet our demands or we stay.

Finally, how many of you are fully aware of the unrest and civil wars being fought across the world. Why choose Gaza? Are the starving people of Zimbabwe not derserving of a little banner hanging from Hicks? Or the women and children of Haiti, who are destitute and forced to eat clay to prevent starvation? The oppressed people of Tibet? Those dying in Dawfur? These people are no different from those struggling in Gaza. None of them asked to be subjected to the terrible conditions they live in.

Stop throwing your middle class toys out of the pram, and make a real sacrifice if you care so much.

    ReplyDelete
  21. "Be strong brothers", "Ignore the nay sayers"...you do realise you're not in Gaza? Get a grip.

And I'm sure those computers you plan to donate will go down a right treat. Oh boy, that would defo make my day if I'd just lost my family and my home. I know, maybe, instead of dropping bombs, they can just be really mean to each other over MSN. Gees, if only we'd had the internet during World War one.

  22. For three years I had an office in the Hicks building; I left it in October to take up a job elsewhere.

I'd like to wish the occupiers luck with their principled protest.

I feel a mixture of amusement and concern at the ridicule other commentators are offering on this blog.

I hope the writers of these comments have been invited to drop in and discuss their concerns in person. I suspect many would not be brave enough to associate their face to such evidently ridiculous positions; many, of course, have not even been brave enough to associate their name.

  23. James Cranch - thanks for the update on your new job, hope it's treating you well and that you've made lots of new friends.

Now go away and stop encouraging them.

  24. James Cranch, get you. I have signed my name on the above petition, as have numerous others. Have you signed yours in support of 'occupied' or in protest of the situation in Gaza?

Been there and we walked due to The AWL, and our name is underclassrising.net just the fact this blog will not let us post a url or name, there is no conversation to be had with The AWL to be frank, been there and there is only enough head banging you can no..

We are more than happy to keep people updated, and do suport the ocupation, but not the polatics of The AWL:

  30. The occupiers are risking something by their direct action and that commands respect alone. The minority of bloggers filling up this column with their rampant negativity appear to be risking nothing.

Mate, I don't know who you are-but wikipedia the names these people signed as-you'll realise they're pulling your leg.

"what with the AWL yes a serious compromise to be frank, following there actions in feb of this year, and the words at meetings, forgive us for this but lets be frank here shall we there scum, and we desire not to be in the same room or space as them if we are to be honest, take the persons from The AWL and we know there allright, place them into The AWL whole new ball game is it not, look we support the ocupation as a tool of propaganda and keeping the issue there.."

Seriously, learn to write. I have absolutely no idea what you're saying here.

    ReplyDelete
  33. "The occupiers are risking something by their direct action and that commands respect alone."

No, their demands include not facing retribution. They're not really risking anything, they've even been good enough to do this well clear of exams, unlike the other protests which happened in late January/Early February. It's difficult to see this as anything more than a publicity stunt.

Not that that means they shouldn't be expelled for betraying the democratic process they claim to adhere so strictly to.

    ReplyDelete
  34. What are you (above) risking?

    ReplyDelete
  35. Nothing, but I'm not the one claiming to make a courageous stand.

    ReplyDelete
  36. On that note, I notice in the Forge Press their faces are pixilated on the front cover, and they've yet to publish their names as a group.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Publish yours.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Again, I'm not the one protesting. I've not said anything offensive, nor have I personally insulted anyone. Anonymity is a right I have in light of that, a right lost when you decide to take over the learning environment of a group of people you claim to represent in the face of oppression. It means they're not personally accountable for what they're doing.

and the demands aren't pathetic, some are too dramatic but at least they are trying to make a difference, opposed to apathetically sitting behind your keyboard bitching about them. Propose other methods if you don't agree.

"AWL ARE SCUM IS THAT CLEAR ENOUGH?"
nicely put,it's unfortunate that the occupation has been apparently hijacked by socialist/anarchist/communist leanings, I'm pretty sure Palestinians wouldn't massively appreciate anarchist support.

Isn't that the kind of apathy which resulted in the election of a Student Executive which you don't feel represents your views?

Hasn't it been said elsewhere that apathy is the problem and the occupiers should be commended for getting out there and doing something?

Well, this is our 'doing something', and we won't stop being childish until you do. It's not that we 'dont care' its that we 'dont agree' - subtle, I know, but you've got plenty time to look it up while you're enjoying your weekend in 'the occupation'.
